My first Christmas family of the year. :) I love this time of the year - shooting all of my annual clients, seeing their families grow - and meeting new clients for the first time!

I missed Keaton's 13 month update. So here it is, a few days late:

He's 13 months. He's going through another growth spurt, eating a ton, sleeping a ton, growing out of clothes a ton. He wears mostly 18 mo and 24 mo clothing. Big boy.

He gives kisses. He blows kisses to Mom and Ali when they leave. He waves to everyone. He loves outside. He hates the car but thanks to our new carseat, he's doin' much better.

He says: bird, dada, granda, nana, nini, mama, dog, that. Other things, but I can't quite tell what. He also signs for milk constantly. He nurses like he's starving. At 13 months, shouldn't he be naturally weaning? Maybe not.

He loves to feed himself with a spoon and is surprisingly neat about it. The difficulty is getting the food from the plate onto the spoon.

He loves to play peek-a-boo, hide and seek and tag.

He is incredibly vocal. He gives great bear hugs.

He just got his first pair of shoes and he loves them.

He's into the slide and the swing at the park. He's into helping me: sweep, do dishes, chop veggies, stir things on the stove.

He's a great courier. If I hand him something and ask him to bring it to his Papa, he does. He'll also throw things in the trash for me. His understanding of what's going on it fantastic.

His sleep schedule has been pretty unbelievably awesome (8:30pm-6:30am nursing-then-back-to-sleep til 8am) but lately has had more wake-up-to-nurse times which has me exhausted. I'm hoping it's teeth or growth spurt and not new trend.

He's hilarious and so sweet and playful.

This is all I can think of right now.

A week ago, I got caught in the trolley tracks here in mighty Boston, and now my rear wheel rattles to high hell when I go over any serious bump. It absorbs very little impact. I've taken it off and put it back on, to no avail. Fully inflated the tire too. I need to mention I installed a new freewheel a couple days before the incident.

FYI, it's an 80's miyata 12 speed road bike with horizontal dropouts. Really skinny frame, really thin 27inch wheels.

Opinions?

There was an incident in Mandeville Canyon on July 4th 2008 when a car in an incident of road rage caused injuries to two cyclists. The driver was charged  and today the verdict is in.

Former emergency room doctor Christopher Thompson, 60, was accused of deliberately ramming his car into two cyclists. The driver  was found guilty on two counts of reckless driving; two counts of battery causing serious bodily harm; two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, with the weapon being his car; and one count of mayhem. He faces a possible 10-year prison sentence.

You can read the story here...

another clothing question

My knee warmers don't like to stay up. They're Pearl Izumi, size medium. They don't feel too big, but they slide down anyhow and don't seem to have any sort of gripper at the thigh.

I also don't care much for my arm warmers. The gripper isn't very comfortable and they're a little too big, but I bought the smallest size they had, which I think was small. If they come in XS, they would probably have been too short. They get much more use than the knee warmers so it really wouldn't hurt to have a second pair.

So now I'm looking at other brands. I like the style of the Hincapie ones, very simple (I also don't like the stitching on the PI ones), plus I can get knee and arm warmers to match (current ones don't)... and in red. However, I'm wondering about their sizing. I assume these measurements are the width when laid out flat.

For example, the sizing on the knee warmers is this:
Small
top: 7 1/2"
bottom: 5 1/2"
length: 19"

Anybody have any experience with Hincapie? How much give does the material and elastic they use actually have? Based on this sizing, it seems like they won't be big enough in the thigh. I don't want them too tight, but I also don't want them to slide down like my current ones. The medium size is barely larger, like 1/8 of an inch, but they're a half inch longer. My PI pair are about an inch bigger in the thigh and a half inch bigger at the bottom. And is that length pretty standard? They're 3 inches longer than my PI pair. How high am I supposed to be hiking these things up on my thigh?

Thanks for the input on a stupid question.

SPD pedals?
  bikes - (ak404)

02:16am 01/11/2009

mood: tired
After 20 years of using the same traditional metal pedals - passed down from my first BMX bike all the way to my current road bike - I've finally decided to go with a pair of durable clipless pedals suitable not only for riding, but running around in Atlanta. (The fact that I also found a barely-used set of cleats at the Salvation Army also helped!)

I'm thinking of starting with the SPD system, but I'm not sure which pedals will give me the most bang for my buck, though the general consensus points towards the Shimano M520. I am fairly sure, however, that I will most probably end up destroying my first set. I remember experimenting with a set of hand-me-down Nashbar (I think?) pedals in college, but I also remember quickly grinding the hell out of them as well (I had issues getting the cleat to connect with the pedals properly. Either that, or I just treated them too roughly).

Suggestions? Also, what cleats would you guys suggest? Right now, I've got a set of Pearl Izumi cleats that feel a bit rigid around the balls of my feet: they're somewhat uncomfortable, which is, I suspect, the reason I found them for $10 at the Salvation Army, but I've been trying to break them in.

jersey question
  bikes - (loopybunny)

mood: curious
Is there a way to keep jerseys in decent condition that doesn't involve handwashing it? I figure handwashing won't get it (I only own one) quite as clean and since I'm sweating in this thing, I want to make sure it's really clean. Today, I put it in a hosiery bag to wash it, not that it makes any difference at this point since it's badly snagged from something after washing it a couple of weeks ago.

I want to make sure that my next one stays looking somewhat new for more than a couple of months if at all possible, especially if I buy a slightly more expensive jersey. Did I do something wrong or is it because it's a "summer weight" or cheap jersey?

Telescope advice

  Hello, newbie here.
I have designs on getting my first entry level telescope, but I have no idea where to start.
I know that I have a VERY limited budget (£150 tops), I know there are a few entry level scopes at that price, but what's good?

I know that some will be good for the moon and others better for farther afield. I do love the moon, and I would love to sit and watch it all night, however, I think I'll end up getting more joy from something that looks further into the murky depths of space. Any tips? What do I need to consider? Also, am I likely to be able to get a 'scope at that price which I can also attach my SLR to to get some images?

Many thanks in advance!
I may cross-post this, for which I apologise!

I decided to try to write more. It's my super secret dream to one day be a novelist. I know, you read this blog and it doesn't scream "writer" at all, but I always thought I could do it.

So I found a website that has low standards and low pay, and submitted some articles based on assignments they picked for me (based on my interests). And they just bought two of them! I'm so stoked, even though I know it's silly.

Here I am.

Now, salad and fresh baked bread time.

So, apropos my previous post... no funding. I am teh unemployed as of today; sorry if you've already seen this on Facebook, or my other blog, etc., I'm just trying to make sure everyone is aware. For anyone waiting with bated breath to hear who the secret company was, we were a studio under the 2K Games label of Take 2 Interactive, presumably (had we ever gone public) with the name "2K Austin."

Ah well.
